Connecting PE pipes with a compression fitting (also called a clamp fitting or PP screw fitting) is the fastest and least tool-intensive method for creating pressure-tight lines – completely without a welding unit or special machine. Compression fittings are ideal for water lines, irrigation, well connections and pool installations. This connection is detachable, reusable and well within reach even for inexperienced DIYers.

What you need
Material:
- PE pipe in the right dimension (e.g. 25, 32 or 40 mm outside diameter)
- Compression fitting in exactly the right size (coupler, elbow, tee, transition or similar) from the range of mechanical fittings
- lubricant with drinking-water approval if needed (usually only necessary from 40–50 mm)
Tools:
- Pipe shears or a fine-toothed saw for a clean, right-angled cut
- Deburrer or chamfering tool for the pipe edge
- Assembly wrench or pipe wrench (for larger diameters)
- Tape measure and pen to mark the insertion depth
Preparation & safety
Always work cleanly: sand, chips or burrs inside the fitting damage the O-ring and lead to leaks. Clean the pipe and seal before assembly.
If the line is to carry drinking water, use only pipes and fittings with DVGW approval. Make sure the pressure rating of the fitting matches the system – you will find details in the article PN10/PN16 explained. Depressurise the system before working on existing lines.
Step-by-step guide
- Cut the pipe at a 90° angle: cut the PE pipe exactly at a right angle with the pipe shears. An angled cut prevents the pipe from seating fully against the stop and endangers tightness.
- Deburr & chamfer: use the deburrer to remove the sharp inner and outer burr and chamfer the edge slightly. This way the pipe slides past the O-ring without damaging it.
- Check the union nut & clamping ring: loosen the union nut a little and check that the clamping ring (gripping ring) and O-ring are seated correctly and in the right order in the fitting. If necessary, mark the insertion depth on the pipe.
- Push the pipe in to the stop: with a slight twisting motion, push the pipe through the nut, clamping ring and O-ring up to the firm stop in the fitting body. With large diameters, some lubricant with drinking-water approval helps.
- Tighten the nut hand-tight + with a wrench: first tighten the union nut by hand; up to approx. 32 mm this is usually enough. With larger dimensions, retighten firmly with the assembly wrench, but without force – the clamping ring digs into the pipe in the process.
- Tightness / pressure test: slowly pressurise the line and check all connections for drips. Retighten the nut slightly if necessary. A pressure test according to DVGW specifications secures the installation permanently.
Common mistakes
- Burr not removed: a sharp cut edge cuts into the O-ring – the most common cause of leaks.
- Pipe not pushed in to the stop: the clamping ring then grips too little, and the pipe can slip out under pressure.
- Angled cut: prevents even sealing all around the pipe.
- Wrong pressure rating or size: fitting and pipe must match in diameter and PN rating.
- Union nut too loose or over-tightened with brute force: both lead to leaks or damaged threads.
Compression, welding or push-fit?
Compression fittings are the most flexible solution, but cannot be recommended for every application. Welded connections (electrofusion or butt welding) are permanent and especially pressure-tight, while push-fit fittings are especially fast. FAQ
Do I really have to deburr PE pipes before compressing?
Yes. The burr created during cutting can damage the O-ring and make the connection leak. Deburring and chamfering takes only seconds and is mandatory.
Do I need lubricant?
Usually not up to approx. 32–40 mm diameter. With larger pipes, a lubricant makes insertion easier – for drinking water, use only agents with DVGW/drinking-water approval.
Are compression fittings approved for drinking water?
Suitable compression fittings and PE pipes according to DIN 8074/8075 with DVGW approval may be used in the drinking-water sector. When buying, look for the corresponding marking.
Can I reuse a compression fitting?
In principle, yes – the connection is detachable. Before refitting, check the O-ring and clamping ring for damage and replace worn seals.
