Greenhouses and raised beds are ideal applications for drip irrigation: the areas are small, intensively planted and need even watering directly at the root. With a few components and a little planning, the irrigation runs fully automatically – even while you are on holiday.
Higher water demand under glass
Under glass or film it is warmer and evaporation increases. Calculate towards the upper end of the rule of thumb (approx. 20–25 l/m² per week), and even more for fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers. Estimate the exact daily demand here:
The right layout
- Greenhouse: one dripline per plant row; dripper spacing 20–30 cm, with individual plants place on-line drippers in a targeted way.
- Raised bed: 2–3 parallel driplines spaced approx. 25–30 cm apart ensure even moistening.
- Containers/pots: connect 1–2 individual drippers per pot via a distributor.

Automation – even without a power connection
A greenhouse often lacks a power socket. A 9V solenoid valve with battery controller nevertheless waters reliably on a schedule. With several beds, splitting into zones is worthwhile.
